Pullela Gopichand hopes his biopic will inspire youth to achieve dreams (Source: Mumbai Mirror)

The makers of MS Dhoni’s biopic are at it again — with a project on Pullela Gopichand, one of the biggest success stories of Indian sport. The film, which is yet to be titled, will formally take off on Thursday, the birthday of Gopichand. The bilingual film (Hindi and Telugu), a joint collaboration of Fox Star Studios and Abundantia Entertainment, will be another untold story — just like Dhoni’s biopic — about the badminton star’s life and times.

It will track both his playing and coaching careers, which means there will be characters of Saina Nehwal, PV Sindhu as well as Kidambi Srikanth in the film.

It will also show how Gopichand —a former all-England champion (2001)and who produced two Olympic medallists for the success-starved country —became a badminton player as his first love was, in fact, cricket. Mirror learns that Sudheer Babu, a Tollywood star who also played badminton with Gopi, will essay the character.

“It’s a proud moment for us to present the incredible story of Gopi. It’s an inspirational story of a man who not only was an outstanding player but went onto coach the new generation of players and has changed the face of badminton sport and has taken it to its current heights,” said Vijay Singh, CEO, Fox Star Studios.

Added Vikram Malhotra, CEO, Abundantia Entertainment, “It is a huge responsibility for us to bring the Pullela Gopichand story to the big screen.”

Commenting on the biopic, Gopichand, said, “Badminton is at an inflection point in our country and nothing delights me more than to see the rapidly growing interest for the sport, especially with the youth. I would be proud if by sharing my story as a film, we can encourage more and more people to pursue their dreams. I am excited with the developments on the film and look forward to Vikram and Fox Star taking this film to the masses.”
